[So far in 1 John we have discovered that there is:]

[A Confidence To Hold – Defeating Doubt]

[A Confusion To Face – Spiritual Warfare]

[A Conviction That Witnesses – The Witness of God within and in heaven.]

[A Commanding Confidence – We Know that we Know that we are saved.]

[A Calling Christian – The Importance of Prayer.]

[What Is a Death Line? – J. Harold Smith used to preach a message, that was well known, called Crossing God’s Death Line.  In that message he preached about three death lines that people often cross.]

1.     [Blaspheming Holy Ghost]

2.     [Selling your birthright]

3.     [Sinning away your day of grace]

[Now, Christians today, because they do not know their Bible, and perhaps because they do not hold in hand the actual Word of God, or do not really believe that their Bible is the perfect Word of God, Christians today do not want to believe that there are sins unto death.  But our text clearly declares that there is a sin unto death.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

[We must cleave to our King James Bible, knowing with all assurance that God’s word is absolutely perfect, even today.  Because, if we don’t, fully believe that the Word of God is perfect today we will begin to excuse away whole portions of the Word of God.]

[The Word of God, in our text today, states loud and clear,]

 [1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

[From our text let us understand,]

A.   The Condemnation of ALL Sin (Rom 6.23)

[Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.]

[Make no mistake about it, all sin leads to death sooner or later.  Sin brought death into this world and sin always leads to death, both spiritual and physical.  Whether the sin is in born again Christians or in lost people, sin will eventually bring you to death.]

[Sin found its way into this world in the Garden of Eden.  Adam walked with God in that perfect, eternal place and God said to Adam,]

[Genesis 2:16-17 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.]

[Then not long thereafter,]

[Genesis 3:3-4 3 [Eve] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [She changed one word, words matter] 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, [Ye shall not surely die:]

[Our doubts concerning the gravity of sin, all sin, stem from the lies of the devil and our mistaken handling and trust in the Word of God.  Without any doubt, when Adam and Even sinned against God DEATH entered into this world and is in this world still today.]

[All sin leads to death, first our spiritual death, eventually our physical death, and possibly our eternal death.  Sin all sin condemns.  There are some sin’s that can lead to our physical death sooner than we might hope.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

B.   The Calling Out of Deadly Sin (1 Cor 10.7-12) [– The New Testament calls out deadly sins that are seen played out in the Bible.]

[1 Corinthians 10:7-12 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.]

[Notice, first of all verse 11 in this text.  It says,]

[1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.]

[These things recorded in the Old Testament are meant to reveal something to us.  They reveal the deadly cost of sin.]

[Those who sinned unto death include,]

1.     [Idolaters (1 Cor 10.7; cf. Exo 32) - 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.- God Had to Kill them!  When Moses was on the mount for 40 days, receiving the Ten Commandments from God, Aaron and the people built the idol and worshipped it.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

2.     [Fornicators (1 Cor 10.8; Rom1.26-32; cf. Num 25) - 8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. God Had to Kill them! This is referring to when Israel was in Shittim and the people committed whoredom with the daughters of Moab and then began to worship Baalpeor, a fertility god who demanded sexual immorality in worship.  23,000 people died as a result of that sin.]

[In our day sexual immorality is considered normal and expected.  In the Word of God it was a sin unto death.  Fornication is simple sexual immorality; Sex outside of marriage.  Fornication includes Adultery, Fornication, Sodomy, and any other deviant sexual behavior.]

[Today, in America, people have become so wicked and immoral in the sight of God that they are now demanding that anyone who speaks out against sexual immorality be charged as a criminal.  They are fulfilling the Word of God in their demands,]

[Romans 1:26-32 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. ]

[You need to hear the Word of God, sexual immorality is a sin unto death.  What does this really mean?]

[It can mean that God is justified in taking you out of this world when you commit this sin, without warning!]

[It can mean that when you commit this sin, and God convicts you, calling you to repentance and perhaps redemption, and if you refuse God, that God may no longer call you (invite you) to be saved.  You will die a lost man and you will be condemned to the Lake of fire and brimstone. Is that immorality worth the risk?]

[You go ahead and laugh at the Word of God.  You won’t be laughing when you are cast into that Lake of Fire and Brimstone for all eternity to come.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

3.  Tempters of Christ (1 Cor 10. 9; cf. Exo 17.1-7; Number 21.4-9) [- 9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.- God Had to Kill them! This reminds us of when Israel journeyed from Hor to the Red Sea and of the place called Meribah when Israel tempted God.  As a result God sent serpents and many people died.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

4.     Murmured Against God (1 Cor 10.10; cf. Num 11) [- 10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. -  God Had to Kill them! The Children of Israel grew weary of the manna God provided them and murmured and demanded flesh.  God heard their complaining and sent them quail.  Then the Word of God states,]

[Numbers 11:33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. ]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

[Now notice why all of these sins unto death were written,]

[1 Corinthians 10:11-12 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. ]

 [Other Biblical Examples, ]

[Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5.1-11; cf. 3)]

[Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? ]

[Failed Parenting (1 Sam 3; cf. 13) - Eli and his house]

[1 Samuel 3:13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. ]

 [For Lost People]

[The sin unto death represents their last, God given, opportunity to receive the grace of God and be redeemed.  God does not want any person to perish and end up in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone.  Therefore, God offers many opportunities for lost people to be saved.  But don’t make the mistake of thinking that you can get saved whenever you want too.]

[Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.]

[2 Corinthians 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) ]

[Don’t sin away your day of grace!  Now is the day of salvation!]

[John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. ]

[Today God may be drawing you and inviting you to be saved, tomorrow God may not continue to draw you, then you will not be able to be saved.  You have foolishly sinned away your day of grace.]

[For the Saved - Chastisement]

[The sin unto death speaks of the chastening hand of our Heavenly Father  (Heb 12.4-17).  Our Heavenly Father does not just sit on the sideline while His adopted children just sin it up in this corrupt world.  No, your Heavenly Father will chasten you if you belong to Him, even to the point of death if you fail to respond.]

Heb 3.7

[1 Corinthians 11:28-32 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.]

[Christian if you tend to look lightly on your own tendency to sin you had better watch out.  Our Heavenly Father warns us that He will chasten His children to the point to death if they do not respond to His correction.]

[1 John 5:16 . . . There is a sin unto death: . . .]

C. The Characteristics of Deadly Sin [- Perhaps these characteristics will help you identify these deadly sins in your life.]

[A Deadly Sin Is,]

1.     A Resolute Sin (Heb 3.7-13) [- A Hardened Heart]

[Hebrews 3:7-13 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: 9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. 11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.]

2.     A Rebellious Sin (1 Sam 2.22-25) [– A sin rebelliously against God.]

[1 Samuel 2:22-25 22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. 24 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD'S people to transgress. 25 If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.]

3.     A Rejecting Sin (1 Sam 15.22-26) [– Rejecting the clear Word of God. Listen to what Samuel said to king Saul,]

[1 Samuel 15:22-26 22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. 24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.]
