God’s Prescription For The Family

Deut 6.1-9

More Resources On The Family

[The Father needs to be the spiritual head of the home - No one can teach a child like a father and mother.]

[Teach them from conception. ]

["Give me the children until they are seven, ]
[and anyone else can have them after that."]
[Francis Xavier]

[Statistics Concerning Youth]

[Issues of faith among youth]

[The Nehemiah Institute that provides testing to over 20,000 students from 1000 schools has found that 85% of Christian kids that attend public school do not embrace a Biblical Christian Worldview!]

[What about teens in Christian schools? The statistics are basically the same]

  • [63% don’t believe Jesus is the Son of God o 58% believe all faiths teach equally valid truths]
  • [51% don’t believe Jesus rose from the dead]
  • [65% don’t believe Satan is a reality]
  • [68% don’t believe the Holy Spirit is a real entity]

Five ways to teach your children according to the Bible:

A.     Teach them Convincingly (vs 4-6; Matt 22.36-38; Psalm 119.9,11,98; Prov 16.31 ) [- “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:” - The Word of God in your heart.  Show your children that God is real in your life and that God’s Word is the guide for your life.  The only way to teach your children convincingly is for them to see the force of the reality of God in you.  Your children, your youth will detect a farce and will not believe what is not real to you.  Hence Jesus reiterated theses words when He was asked,]

[Matthew 22:36-38 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. ]

[The Bible teaches us that the Word of God alive within us will:]

1.      [Be our Guide (Psalm 119.9,11)]

[Psalms 119:9 9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. ]

[Psalms 119:11 11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.]

2.      [Be our Glory (Psalm 119.98; Prov 16.31)]

[Psalms 119:98 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. ]

[Proverbs 16:31 31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. ]

[Fathers and Mothers need to show their children the reality of God in them.  The reality of a sincere and preeminent love for God in their life, and the love and truth of God flowing out of them toward their children.]

[If a love for God and a heartfelt trust of God’s Word is not the evidence of your life then you need to diligently consider what is in your heart.  Your children, grandchildren, and great grand children need to see the evidence of your devotion pouring out of the deepest parts of your being.]

B.     Teach them Consistently  (vs 7; Isa 28.9-13; Prov 22.6; Eph 6.4; Rev 3.20; Prov 14.1) [– And thou shalt teach  them [God’s Words in your heart] diligently unto thy children . . . -  Notice that word diligently.  God has given mankind the words of life.  God has told us how we can experience the greatest and fullness of life.  It is all revealed in His written Word and is experienced through His living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ.  God’s way is the way of glory.  But mankind has often thought there was a better way.  People think they know more about living life than God.  Isaiah wrote,]

[Isaiah 28:9-13 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. ]

[God has given us the way of rest and contentment, it is revealed in His written Word.  The problem is that sinful people are bent away from hearing the Word of God.  Isaiah wrote, “. . . yet they would not hear . . .”]

[Father’s and Mother’s have the influence with their children to bring them to the point where they will love, trust, and obey God’s precious Word.  But we must love the Word ourselves and then teach it to our children diligently.]

[Fathers are the spiritual leaders of the home and they should give purpose and diligence to the way the teach their Children about God and life.  The Bible reminds us to,]

[Proverbs 22:6 6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.]

[Ephesians 6:4 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. ]

[Father’s there must be purpose and consistence in the spiritual, and physical training of your Children.  It just is not good enough to be in the same house as your children.  Fathers should plan to purposefully train their children in the things of God and the things of life.]

[It is my suggestion that Father’s and Mother’s can do a few simple things to bring up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  These might include,

1.      [Sitting down at the diner table together for the evening meal religiously.  This is one of the most neglected events of our modern culture, but possibly one of the most important.  To many homes use the family table as a file cabinet rather than as a round table of fellowship.  Jesus said,]

[Revelation 3:20 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.]

[To sit at a table and eat together was considered a time of intimacy in Biblical times.  It was the gesture of friendship.  Hence, families should spend time eating and talking to one another.]

2.      [Special times of devotion – Each Christian should have their own God and I time every day.  But Father’s and Mother’s should take a few minutes each day to have a time of family devotions.  This might most effectively be accomplished immediately following diner while the family is together.  It might consist of reading a few verses of the Bible and then briefly talking about what they mean.]

[Father’s should lead their families with diligence and Mother’s should whole heartedly affirm and support the spiritual instruction of the Father and the Word of God.  A mother who does not support the Father’s spiritual instruction of his family will find herself aligned with,]

[Proverbs 14:1 1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. ]

[Parents must love the Lord together and must purpose to consistently build their Children up in the things of God and the matters of life.]

C.     Teach them Conversationally (vs 7; Psalm 19.1; ) [- . . . and shalt talk of them [the Words of God hidden in your heart] when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. -  Talking of the things of God.  Allowing your Children to see that God permeates every aspect of your life.  Father’s your children need to understand how you see Almighty God in:]

1.      [Every Comfort – When thou settest in thine house - James 1:17 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.]

2.      [All of Creation – When you are walking by the way – Psalms 19:1 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. ]

3.      [Every Circumstance Romans 8:28 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. ]

[Father’s and Mother’s, Grandfather’s and Grandmother’s need to allow their children and grandchildren hear them speaking of God and things of God at every opportunity.  We must be unrelenting.]

[Someone might say, “Now Preacher, everything is not a religious thing.  There is more to life than Church.”  You are in deed correct, if the Bible and Church are but a religious thing to you then forget about this sermon all together.  But if God is in your heart then this thing I preach today has nothing at all to do with religion or Church, it has everything to do with a real relationship with a real God, and how could you help but talk about such a thing.]

[Secondly, do you think our adversary the devil and his allies ever rest.  Our Children are attacked with immorality, atheism, and paganism everyday in the public schools, on television, through the radio, from their associations.  Those who would tear down your child’ faith never rest and we must likewise never fail to be on mission with our Lord in our children’s lives.]

[Father’s and Mother’s must build up their children in the things of God relentlessly and without fail.  Speak to your children about the things of God with every possible opportunity.]

[Faith is not only taught, it is often caught.]

D.    Teach them Creatively (vs 7; Col 3.17,23; Prov 3.5-8)[ -. . . and shalt talk of them [the Words of God hidden in your heart] when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up - In all things at all times.]

[Father’s and Mother’s should teach and show their children that the relationship one has with God can and should permeate everything they do in life.  And this means absolutely everything.  The Bible states,]

[Colossians 3:16-17 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. ]

[Colossians 3:23 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; ]

[Proverbs 3:5-8 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. ]

[There is no contentment in life like that found in a life wholly surrendered to God and lived out for the Lord Jesus Chrsit.]

[Father’s and Mother’s must show their children how to keep God first in their lives, and how to experience the abundant life that can only be found in Jesus Christ.]

E.     Teach it Conspicuously (vs 8-9; Romans 1.16) [- And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. – This is to live your Christian life so that everyone can see it. As Paul wrote,]

[Romans 1:16 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.]

[Are you ashamed of Christ?]

[Are you ashamed to bow your head and give thanks for the food God has given you when you are sitting in a restaurant?]

[Are you ashamed to be seen reading your Bible in public?]

[Are you and your house Covert Christians?]

[Father’s and Mother’s who are covert Christians can expect their children to be covert as well.  As a matter of Scripture your children may be so covert that you will not be able to tell they are Christian’s at all.
