[In our contemporary Christian culture there seems to
be a lot of confusion about what it means to be a Christian.
For many it is just a matter of religiously attending Church services,
and having a rather general understanding about the Bible and the name Jesus.
These live their lives as they please, walking in sin and wantonness and
rarely break the threshold of a worship center.
It is as though their minimal understanding about God and Jesus should be
enough to secure them a position in heaven and the good graces of God.]
[But the Bible reveals that being born again is far more than
a mere intellectual assent of God and Christ.
The Bible reveals,]
19 Thou believest that there is one God;
thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. ]
[Satan has a rather comprehensive knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Satan was there when Jesus reigned in heaven before His immaculate
conception and birth on this earth.
Satan was there when Herod the great ordered the destruction of every child
under two years old in an attempt to stamp out the one born, King of the Jews.
Satan was there throughout the earthly ministry of our Lord and observed
all of the miracles he performed.
Satan was there when Jesus was falsely convicted, ruthlessly beaten, crucified,
died and was buried. Satan was
there when Jesus physically rose from the grave and then ascended on high to sit
on the right hand of God the Father, Almighty.
Satan today faces the Lord Jesus Christ every time he desire to torment
one of God chosen and elect here on earth.
Satan knows all about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Satan knows all about the Bible, Satan knows all about God.
Yet, Satan is not saved.
There will not be a devil, or demon in God’s eternal kingdom.]
[The point is simple, a mere intellectual assent is not enough
to get one into heaven. One must
be, as Jesus told Nicodemus,]
3 Jesus answered and said unto him,
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except
a man be born again,
he cannot see the kingdom
[But how does one know
when he or she has truly been born again?
What are the evidences of true spiritual life that will be found in a
born again Christian?]
[The new birth is just like any natural birth, in that there
are tell tale signs of life as a result of a natural birth.
When a baby is born there is the
tell tale sign of:]
[A mother in
labor. It is usually
obvious when a mother is in labor.
Men you will know that your wife is in labor when she looks at you
like she would love to grab your lower eye lids and stretch them over your
head to the back of your head.
Or something like that. But
even a mother in labor is not really evidence of a live birth.]
[New Born Baby
present – There will be the presence of a child.
It is a real birth. The
mother is there, the doctor or midwife or who ever is there, the family is
often there. There is and has
been a birth and many have seen it happen.
Your new birth is Christ is every bit an event just as your physical
birth was. You were not
ignorantly and covertly born again into the family of God.
The new birth is not an osmosis, it is an obvious personal,
spiritual, real event. A new
born Christian will always be present, and often, usually, there will be
others who witness the event.
[The Sounds of
Life – Almost universally there is the smack of a babies bottom, the cry
of the new born child, and the outbursts of joy from all who are present.
Complete silence is not the usual and expected result of a birth.
Hence, there are the ususal sounds that are the result of a new birth
in Christ. The Church rejoices
when the lost repent and come to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Bible reveals]
10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is
joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. ]
[The Struggles of Growth –
Following any natural birth there are the joys and struggles of growing and
maturing a child into adulthood.]
[The point is that there are the evidences of life that mark
the personhood and existence of any natural being.
In this book of the Bible John identifies the evidences of the new birth
that should mark the life of every born again believer.
Hence this study in the book of first John has been entitled “The
Evidences Of Life,” indicating that
we will seek to discover those things that should be manifested in all who are
born again in Christ.]
[We will begin our study tonight with a broad survey of this
book and in weeks to come we will dig into the meat of the book and discover
what our Lord has reveal to us in His precious Word.]
In This Christian Life There Is:
A Communion to Cherish (1
John 1.1-4, cf.
8.14-16) [– “That
which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have
fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship
is with the Father, and with
his Son Jesus Christ.” -
There is common ground between all born again Christians that results is a
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit
of God, they are the sons of God. 15
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have
received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness
with our spirit, that we are the children of God:]
[Our fellowship with
other believers in Christ is a gift realized within us through the indwelling
presence of the Holy Spirit of God.
It is not something to be taken lightly.
It is an incredible, blessed communion that is a result of our new birth
[We learn for
scripture that Christ loves and cherishes His bride, the Church, and every born
again believer should have a similar heart of the Body of our Lord.]
A Covenant To Proclaim (1
John 1.5-7, cf.
5; John 14.6)
then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, . . .”
– The message that John is proclaiming is a message of light, life, and hope.
It is the message of the manifesting light of our Lord Jesus Christ
revealing the meaning, purpose, and prospects of life.
Only through the new birth and life in the Lord Jesus Christ can one find
fulfillment and contentment in life.
Otherwise, one is walking in utter darkness and the hopelessness that
accompanies a life of wandering bewilderment and the devastating affect of
sinfulness. The Bible reveal that
. . the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
[Clearly, those who
have stepped out of the darkness in to the light have the message of all
messages and ought to find themselves, like the apostle John, proclaiming and
declaring the message with every opportunity.]
A Cleansing to receive (1
John 1.8-2.2, cf
vs 9; Col 1.14;
Isa 43.25) [–
If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – Glory to God there is an
unfathomable release realized through our new birth in our Lord Jesus Christ.
At the moment of our salvation the blood of our Savior washes all of our
sins away. The Bible reveals,]
14 In whom we have redemption through
his blood, even the forgiveness
of sins: ]
[This cleansing is so
full and so free that we are told that,]
12 As far as the east is from the west,
so far hath he removed our
transgressions from us.]
am he that blotteth out thy
transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.]
[All your transgression have been washed away and the guilt
that accompanied them is all gone as well.
You have a fresh start, a new beginning, a new life to live through our
Lord Jesus Christ. This incredible
cleansing is available to every born again believer throughout their Christian
A Commandment To Keep - Keep His Commandments (1
John 2.3-6, cf
vs 3; 1 John 5.3;
Rom 7.22) [–
And hereby we do know that we know him,
if we keep his commandments. – Certainly there is a commandment to keep when
we live our lives in the new birth.
Our lord has given us an incredible cleansing and a new start in life.
He has also given us a light to guide us and direct our steps in this new
and glorious life. For the born
again Christian living a life in obedience to our Lord and His revealed will
should not be grievous it ought to be a joy.
3 For this is the love of God, that we
keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. ]
[A born again
Christian ought to have and hold a heart like the apostle Paul who wrote,]
22 For I delight in the law of God after
the inward man: ]
[If you find that living a life in obedience to our Lord is a
burden to heavy to bear then you had better consider whether your new birth was
a birth at all.]
[All heaven is waiting to help those who will discover the
will of God and do it.][J. Robert Ashcroft (1878-1958)]
[Faith and obedience are bound up in the same bundle.
He that obeys God, trusts God; and he that trusts God, obeys God.]
[Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892]
A Compassion To Show (1
John 2.9-11, cf
vs 10; Rom
13.10) [– He that loveth his
brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
- Love your brother.
Born again Christians will find that they are compelled from the deepest
chasms of their being to love God first, and love their neighbor as themselves.
They will also discover that love is the root and sustenance of
everything else in their Christian existence.
The Bible reveals that,]
. . . love is the
fulfilling of the law.]
[Christians are compelled by love and guided by truth.
Love does not disregard the truth for that would result in chaos, and
truth is not devoid of love for that would be cruel.
Truth and love work together to bring fullness and glory to all of life.]
[No born again Christian can endure without the evidence of
love in their Christian journey, for it is one of the undying evidences of the
new birth and the presence of God in ones life.]
[All courage, skill and faith are nothing,
if they are not judged according to love. ]
Zwingli, in "Zwingli: Father of the Swiss Reformation,"
Christian History, no. 4.]
[Through this study we will also discover:]
[The Measure of love (1
[Facing arrest as an Anabaptist, Dirck Willems fled
for his life across a frozen lake. When his pursuer broke through the ice,
Willems gave up his chance to escape by turning to save his persecutor. He was
then captured, imprisoned and burned at the stake in 1569.]

A Caution to Heed (1
John 2.15-17, cf vs 15;
[- Love not the world, neither the
things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. -
Love not the world, and the
distractions and allurements that accompany it.
A born again Christian will be naturally disposed to,]
2 Set your affection on things above,
not on things on the earth.]
6:19-21 19 Lay not up for
yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where
thieves break through and steal: 20
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there
will your heart be also. ]
[A born again
Christian will realize the evidence of a new outlook on life.
Their life in this world, while real, and vibrant is but a vapor.
They are but sojourners in this mortal life.
This temporary existence will one day give way to their eternal life in
Christ and their everlasting home will be forever revealed.
A born again Christian will come to realize that everything offered in
this life is but a stepping stone into eternity to come, and should be used to
prepare themselves and guide others to their eternal home.]
A Confession to Make (1
John 2.22-28, cf vs 23;
1 John 4.14-16)
[- Whosoever denieth the Son, the
same hath not the Father: (but) he
that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. -
Jesus Christ and Abide in Him. The
new birth is realized by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as ones personal Lord
and Savior. One receives our Lord
by confessing the reality of his death, burial, and physical resurrection and
asking Jesus to sve them and come into their lives.
These truths are reveal in,]
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy
mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.]
knows that they have received the Lord Jesus Christ by, ]
14 And we have seen and do testify that
the Father sent the Son to be
the Saviour of the world. 15
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and
he in God. 16 And we have known and
believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love
dwelleth in God, and God in him.]
[When you know from the depths of your being that Jesus is
God, and the son of God (savior of the world), that Jesus died and physically
rose to save you from your sins, you then know that you have God dwelling inside
of you. There may be times that you
sense His presence, there may be times when you do not sense his presence.
The indwelling presence of God is not based on how you feel, instead it
is based on what you know. If you
know, that you know, that your know that Jesus is God and the son of God then
you are born again.]
A Character to Develop (1
John 2.29-3.10; cf vs 29) –
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know
that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. -
Do righteousness not because you have
to live a right life, but because you want to live a right life in Christ.
Your want to will be changed by the presence of Christ in you.]
[Always do right. This will gratify most
people, and astonish the rest.]
[Good men avoid sin from the love of
wicked men avoid sin from a fear of punishment.]
[John Wesley, in The Almost Christian.]
[Living a right life
in Christ is,]
[The result of godly expectation - Purity (1
[The reality of godly exposure - Actions (1
John 3.4-10, 6,
A Companion within (1
5.11-13) [- Hereby know we that
we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. -
The indwelling Spirit is the catalyst
for all of the evidences revealed in the epistle of first John.
If any individual finds themselves lacking any of the evidences that
should mark every born again Christian, then there is but one prescription to
cure the cancer hindering their eternal soul.
They need to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and
Savior. For a born again Christian
will not, as a matter of nature, be able to consciously live in any way other
than that which marks those who are truly born again.
It is the result of living a life in the presence of the Lord Jesus
