[We have just read the story of Jacobs ladder.  Jacob, running for his life from his brother, spent a night with a rock for his pillow and saw this vision.  He saw a vision of a ladder ascending up to God with angels ascending and descending on that ladder.  And God promised,] 

[Genesis 28:13-14 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.]

[Having received this great blessing from God Jacob set up a stone of memorial or a standing stone that he might always remember what he saw and heard that night.  This stone also stood as a reminder of the commitment or covenant Jacob made with God that day.] 

[Christians need memorials in their lives to remind them of the commitments that they make with our Lord Jesus Christ.  Our country has a multitude of memorials that remind us of God’s deliverances and gifts to our nation and its people.  Without a shadow of doubt those memorials record our Christian heritage and history and remind us of the commitments and covenants that our country has entered into with our mighty and glorious Heavenly Father.] 

[The Jefferson Memorial records,] 

[Almighty God hath created the mind free. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burthens are a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship or ministry or shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion. I know but one code of morality for men whether acting singly or collectively.] 

[Today, there are many who have and are rewriting our nation’s history so as to lead our children, youth, and young adults to believe that America never was a Christian nation.  This redaction history is not new to our culture.  It has been occurring over the last couple of generations so that, today there are whole segments of our culture that hold the lies of our recent American History thinking that Christianity was not a part of our founding as a nation.  But their history is far from the truth.] 

[These modern historians seek to remove our Christian roots from our history because, He who controls the history molds the culture.  Our culture is on a downward spiral into chaos because our people have been taught that liberty is license and license without responsibility results in utter chaos.  The truth is that freedom is never free, it comes at a great expense and stands upon an undeniable foundation.  Without the sure foundation upon which all liberty must stand tyranny will arise.] 

[God said,] 

[Psalm 11:3 3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?]

[So the question arises, What has been the foundation upon which our great country was built?]   

A.    American Liberty Requires Character[1] [- The law and its affect - America has become a country of massive government.  We are far and away beyond big government; we are living under an overwhelmingly large government.] 

[The Bookings Institute Press reports that 17 million people work for the Government according to The True Size Of Government by Paul C. Light. [2]   America’s population is at nearly 307 million people.[3]  The United States Department of Labor, Employment Situation Summary, reported about 155 million people in our American workforce.[4]  This means that there is one Government worker for every 9 working people in America.  In the late 1800’s there was 1 Government worker for every 200 working Americans.  Imagine any nine working people trying to pay the salary and benefits of any given government employee.  Now you know where our deficit is coming from.] 

[Why does America need such big Government?  Because America has lost her character.  What do I mean by America has lost her character?] 

[In the early 1800’s, Alexis de Tocqueville after traveling through America, stated,  

[   I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors...; in her fertile fields and boundless forests; in her rich mines and vast world commerce; in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in her democratic Congress and in her matchless Constitution.]

[Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.]

[America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.]

[It is the people of America that form America’s character.  If our citizens loose their moral fotitude then our country will loose its character.  Now what is moral character.  Your character is your sense of honor, integrity and goodness within yourself.  Your character deals with your personal convictions and responsibilities to yourself, when nobody else is watching.  Your character is reflected by what you will allow yourself to do when you have nobody to answer to but just you.  When no one will call you to task for what you are doing, then what will you allow yourself to do.] 

[If you know you won’t get caught,] 

         [Will you steal?]

         [Will you lie?]

         [Will you cheat?]

         [Will you be sexually immoral?] 

[Therefore, your character deals with what you truly feel is right or wrong.  The truth is that for most human beings, when we have zero accountability we will allow ourselves to do a great many things that we would never allow if we felt we would be held responsible for our actions.  Accountability and responsibility cause us to develop a higher form of character than we would otherwise have.] 

[Hence, Big Government, Our government forces us to be reasonably responsible.  The more personal responsibility we take upon ourselves the less our government needs to try and hold us accountable, the fewer laws and law enforcement we need.  Therefore, if our people have moral character and hold themselves responsible for their choices then we need less government.  The problem in America is that people are becoming less responsible for their actions.  They are showing less and less personal character and the only response must be more laws and more government to try and control the failing moral character of our nation and its people.] 

[For a Christian, there is a continuous accountability that is an inherent part of our faith.  Our Heavenly Father is always watching and will hold His children responsible for their actions.  There is a judgment coming and we will be judged for the good and the bad that we do.  Our God is always watching, He is always recording, He is always holding us accountable for our choices and actions.  This reality builds within a Christian a strong moral character.  So that a Christian knows that he or she is never truly alone and every act is laid open before their Holy Lord God.  This builds an undeniable character within every truly born again Christian.] 

[This kind of deep spiritual character has no need of massive or even big government.  When people are honest, and respect one another they don’t need continuous supervision.  When people strive to be good and respectable there is less need for jails and prisons.  Godly character builds trust and grows liberty and freedom.] 

[Just this last week Fox news reported on an evangelical pastor who was arrest for having a multitude of child pornography on his computer.  This last week our local community has seen four professing Christians who were arrested for running a ponzie scheme and for stealing many millions of dollars from investors.  My friends these represent the failing character of our nation, our churches and our people.]   

[Big government is a direct result of the failing character in America, and America’s character is grown inside of each of America’s citizens.  As America’s character diminishes our government grows and tries to legislate morality.] 

1.      Legislating Morality (Gal 3.19-26) [– The truth is that morality can never be legislated.  Laws are made to try and force people to do the right things.  Laws try to make people be responsible and if they still refuse to be responsible then they force people to be accountable.  But a law is only as good as its enforcement and enforcement requires “bean counters” or someone to detect the transgression, someone to judge the transaction, and someone to enforce the required penalty or the transgression.] 

[When our cultures moral fiber is based upon our laws then people will only be as good as they are forced to be, and that depends on how likely they are to get caught.  I heard and youth say one time, “It’s only wrong if you get caught.”  This is a dangerous mindset for any one to hold.  This mindset will eventually result in chaos and tyranny in our culture.  This mindset stands in stark contrast to liberty and freedom.  This mindset is why our government is growing and striving to control every aspect of our lives.] 

[The truth is that no one can legislate morality.] 

[Edmund Burke wrote in 1791, ] 

[What is liberty without wisdom and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without restraint.]

[Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition to put moral chains upon their own appetites; in proportion as they are disposed to listen to the counsels of the wise and good in preference to the flattery of knaves.]

[Society cannot exist, unless a controlling power upon will and appetite be placed somewhere; and the less of it there is within [God], the more there must be without [Law].]

[It is ordained in the eternal constitution of things, that men of intemperate minds cannot be free. Their passions forge their fetters.] 

[In the Bible, God gave a law, but God’s law was never meant to legislate morality.  The Bible says,] 

[Galatians 3:19-26 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. ]

[Even God’s law was given to show us that we needed something better than the law.  God’s law brings us to Christ, and Christ in us builds the character of God within us.] 

2.      License and Morality (Rom 1.28-32; Jer 17.9) [– License is not liberty, unfettered license will result in chaos and immorality. This has already been discussed in our discourse. ] 

[William Penn wrote, If thou wouldst rule well, thou must rule for God, and to do that, thou must be ruled by him....Those who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.] 

[When a person is ruled by God they make themselves personally accountable to God in every regard and at all times.  This accountability develops a deep inner character within an individual.  These Christian people will,] 

         [Be good people because they know their God wants them to be good.]

         [Be compassionate because they know their God wants them to be loving.]

         [Be honest because they know honesty is highly valued by their God.]

         [Be morally and sexually pure because they know their God demands that they be morally and sexually pure.] 

[Those who demand absolute license apart from an accountability to Almighty God will become chaotic and wicked in their demeanor.  The Bible says,] 

[Romans 1:28-32 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. ]

[Why do the ungodly go in these wicked ways?] 

[Jeremiah 17:9 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? ]

3.      Liberty and Morality (Prov 1.7; ) [– Therefore, Personal responsibility and character are the only foundation for true liberty and true character is only established under the authority of our supreme and watchful creator, the Lord God Almighty.] 

[Timothy Dwight,  A President of Yale,  stated, Where there is no religion, there is no morality....With the loss of religion...the ultimate foundation of confidence is blown up; and the security of life, liberty and property are buried in ruins.] 

[The Bible says,] 

[Proverbs 1:7 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.]

[Proverbs 8:13 13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: . . . ]

[America’s Liberty demands and requires character in our culture which demands character is each and every citizen, and this character can only be found in a deep meaningful relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.]

B.     American Liberty Rests Upon Christ [– Without any doubt the forefathers and founders of our United States of America were men who recognize the necessity of Christianity in America.  We often talk about the freedom of religion and we know that our founding father spoke and wrote often about the freedom of religion in these United States.  But do we really know what they meant when they spoke of religion in this great country?] 

1.      Our Founders Voices About Religion [– Our founding fathers spoke often about the importance of religion, and its resulting morality or character within people.]  

[John Adams, June 21, 1776, “Statesmen, my dear sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which freedom can securely stand. ] 

[Without doubt John Adams knew that our freedom could not stand without morality or character in our people and where does that morality come from, its only source is religion.  America needs its religion.  America will not be free for long if it is ever free from its religion.] 

Thomas Jefferson wrote, I am for freedom of Religion, and against all maneuvers to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another.[5] 

[True religion will only work if it is free religion.  In the old world, the European old world, where our forefathers came from, for many years religion and government were one and the same.  In many cultures in our world this is still largely true.  In these cultures we see the same thing that was seen in these old, dark ages, cultures.  There is repression and tyranny.  People are forced to give lip service to a religious system for fear of their lives.  Hence many today think that freedom must be void of all religion.  Contrary to their philosophies, freedom rests on free religion.  People must be free to recognize and choose the Lord Jesus Christ for themselves and must be free to worship Him freely.] 

[Why?  Because forced religion is no religion at all and only true religion will develop character, and character (as we have already seen) is absolutely necessary for liberty to survive and thrive.] 

[James Madison, June 20, 1785 wrote,  Whilst we assert for ourselves a freedom to embrace, to profess, and to observe the Religion which we believe to be of divine origin, we cannot deny an equal freedom to those whose minds have not yet yielded to the evidence which has convinced us. If this freedom be abused, it is an offence against God, not against man: To God, therefore, not to man, must an account of it be rendered.] 

[What is it that James Madison said here? He said if we will live under the benefits of a freedom of religion then we must let it be free indeed.  People must choose to love God and to worship Him.  The truth is that no one can be forced to know the Lord Jesus Christ, for this then would be forced religion, and forced religion is no religion at all.] 

[So as our founders were for the freedom of religion.  So am I, and I call all of my fellow citizens to support the freedom of religion in our society, for heartfelt faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the foundation and support of our Liberty and Freedom.] 

2.      Our Founders Views Of Religion [– What did our founding fathers mean when they spoke of religion and the freedom of religion?  Did they mean the freedom of every form of religion, as many interpret their words today?  Or did they have something more direct and narrow in mind.  As I study our founding father’s I have discovered a far more narrow understanding flowing from their words.] 

[William Penn preached, For in Jesus Christ, the light of the world, are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; redemption and glory; they are hid from the worldly Christian, from all that are captivated by the spirit and lusts of the world: and whoever would see them (for therein consists the things that belong to their eternal peace) must come to Christ Jesus the true light in their consciences, bring their deeds to Him, love Him and obey Him; whom God hath ordained a light to lighten the Gentiles, and for His salvation to the ends of the earth] 

[James Madison “It is the mutual duty of all to practice Christian forbearance, love, and charity toward others.” ] 

[John Adams, July 26, 1796, The Christian religion is, above all the Religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of Wisdom, Virtue, Equity, and Humanity.” ] 

[Benjamin Franklin, wrote in March 1778,  A Bible and a newspaper in every house, a good school in every district — all studied and appreciated as they merit — are the principal support of virtue, morality, and civil liberty.”] 

[Thomas Jefferson, who is often referred to as a Deist, stated, ] 

[The Bible is the cornerstone of liberty. A student's perusal of the sacred volume will make him a better citizen, a better father, a better husband.] 

[Thomas Jefferson also said, I have always said, I always will say, that the studious perusal of the Sacred Volume [The Bible] will make better citizens, better fathers, and better husbands.  ]

1.      [The doctrines of Jesus are simple and tend to the happiness of man. ]

2.      [There is only one God, and He is all perfect. ]

3.      [There is a future state of rewards and punishment. ]

4.      [To love God with all the heart and thy neighbor as thyself is the sum of all. These are the great points on which to reform the religion of the Jews. ] 

[Thomas Jefferson also said, No one sees with greater pleasure than myself the progress of reason in its advance toward rational Christianity, and my opinion is that if nothing had ever been added to what flowed from His lips, the whole world would at this day been Christian.... Had there never been a commentator there never would have been an infidel. I have little doubt that the whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our Creator, and, I hope, to the pure doctrines of Jesus also. ]

[Thomas Jefferson, 1781, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.”] 

[In a sermon Yale President Timothy Dwight communicated:] 

[God brought His little flock hither and placed it in this wilderness, for the great purpose of establishing permanently the church of Christ in these vast regions of idolatry and sin, and commencing here the glorious work of salvation. This great continent is soon to be filled with the praise of the Millennium. But here is the seed, from which this vast harvest is to spring.] 

[Without any doubt our forefathers believed in the freedom of religion, even in the freedom to refuse religion.  But when they spoke of religion the Lord Jesus Christ was in their minds and Christianity was on their lips.  Our forefathers called our nation to morality and character by calling each citizen to know and worship the Lord Jesus Christ.  They knew that true character, the kind the builds liberty is only found in a heartfelt relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Without our great God there can be no liberty or freedom.] 

[Do you want to see America be great again, then turn to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Know that He is and receive Him as your personal Lord and Savior.  Make your life accountable to Him and let him form your character and it won’t be long and our government won’t need to be the massive government it is anymore.  Why?  Because,] 

         [Godly people are moral people.]

         [Godly people are honest people.]

         [Godly people are good citizens.]

         [Godly people are kind people.]

         [Godly people are the foundation of liberty.] 

C.    American Liberty Renews Through Confession (2 Chron 7.14) [– Now let us respond to Almighty God.  God has said,] 

[2 Chronicles 7:14 14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. ]

[I believe that all of us want our America to be great and free.  But to return to God will definitely mean that we will all need to make some changes in our lives.  There are,] 

         [Things we are doing that we must stop.]

         [Things we are not doing we must do.]

         [Things we are watching and listening to that we must change.] 

[We cannot live in willful sin and in sins of omission and call ourselves the people of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We cannot live in selfishness and covetousness and call ourselves the people of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We cannot live in compromise and worldliness and call ourselves the people of the Lord Jesus Christ.] 

[Are you living in Christ and do you have His Character upon you.  Christianity will foster liberty and freedom in America and will make America great again. ]  

[We each need to Humble ourselves in the sight of God, Pray, and seek His face.  So this is an encompassing Call 2 Fall this morning.  Will you kneel and pray right where you are.  If you can not kneel then just sit in your chair and call out in personal repentance and a personal commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Let Him mold your character and build our great nation through you.]
