[We are in Perilous Times.  People indeed have a powerless form of godliness.  What is the Power of Godliness?  Jesus alone can work godliness in us.]

[A father was overheard verbally chastening his son for his biblical illiteracy.  He said, "you don't even know the lord's prayer."  The son replied, "oh yes I do.  Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord my soul to keep, if I should die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take."  To this the father responded with, "I'm sorry son, I didn't think you knew it."]

A.     Contemporary Views of the Resurrection.

1.      [George Barna - August 13th]

a.       [66% of Baptists believe the Bible is accurate]

b.      [34% of Baptists believe Satan is real]

c.       [45% of Baptists believe Jesus was sinless]

d.      [46% believe in the physical resurrection of Jesus.]

2.      The Skeptics Say: [- Explaining away Christianity.]

a.       Jesus never died - the swoon theory.

b.      Jesus body was stolen.

c.       Jesus spiritually rose from the dead.

B.     Compelling Voices of a Physical Resurrection – [There is no stronger evidence than that of an eyewitness.]  Consider:

1.      The Girls (vs 1-2, 10; cf. Mark 16.1-3; John 20.11-16) [- Mary and others came looking for a body.  They came expecting to find a dead body.  They came intending to honor Christ by honoring His dead body.  These women were apparently unaware of the Roman Guards placed around the tomb for these guards would never have allowed these women to open that tomb and the women as they are coming asked, ]

[Mark 16:1-3 1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?]

[Yet, these women came, driven by their love for our Lord and their desire to honor Him.  As they approached the sepulchre they found something very different than they thought they would find.  They found the Guards lying as though dead, the tomb opened and the angels proclaiming the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  These women were eyewitnesses of the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.]

[John 20:11-16 11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. 14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.]

2.      The Guards (Matt 27.62-66; 28.1-5) [- The Guards ensured the body was not stolen.  While there are those who, to this day, claim that the body of Jesus was stolen from the tomb the evidence points irrefutably against such a possibility.  The centurions were the best trained soldiers of their day.  To fail a mission such as this meant certain death for a Roman soldier.  To think that fishermen, and women could have overcome Roman soldiers is certainly ridiculous.]

[The whole purpose for placing the soldiers at the tomb in the first place was to ensure the body was not stolen.  The Guards were placed to ensure that Christianity would not begin in the first place, the failure of these guards to keep the supernatural from happening provides an incredible support for the physical resurrection. Without argument these soldiers would have been able to fight off any natural attempt to steal Jesus body, or they would have died trying, the fact that they failed and lived reveals that something they could not control or be held responsible for happened instead.]

[Matthew 27:62-66 62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. ]

[Matthew 28:1-5 1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. ]

3.      The Glory (Luke 24.36-49) [- Christ went to great lengths to dispel the doubts of the Apostles.  The most compelling evidences for the physical resurrection are contained in this point and the one following.  There may be arguments and debate about the Guards and their testimony.  There may even be some remote debate about the women at the tomb of Jesus.  But the physical appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ, the ability to reach out and physically touch Him in the presence of multiple witnesses is something that goes beyond any reasonable debate.  The testimony of these verses is undeniable,]

[Luke 24:38-40 38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. 40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.]

4.      The Grounds (1 Cor 15.1-8) [- Dealing with carnal doubt.  What do you think the Bible is all about.  Some feel the Bible is meant to restrict peoples lives.  They feel its counsel and commands lay undo restrictions upon life and liberty.  The Bible does contain instructions for life, but these instructions are all substantiated by one undying theme that permeates the Bible from its beginning to its end.  This unyielding theme is the incarnation, death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Every thing contained in the Bible points to this one historical event.  The New Testament goes to great lengths to manifest the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Consider:]

[1 Corinthians 15:1-8 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ]

a.       [Seen of the Apostles (1 Cor 15.5,7).]

b.      [Seen of over 500 at one time (1 Cor 15.6).]

c.       [Seen of Paul personally (1 Cor 15.8).]

[Think for just a moment about what the New Testament records by eyewitness in the presence of other eyewitnesses.  If the physical resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ didn’t happen then disregard the Bible altogether, for the whole book is meaningless.  However, if the physical resurrection really happened, and Jesus Christ really did rise from the grave, then everything else in the Bible is true as well and you had better learn, listen, and heed those things written in the Bible.]

[Since the resurrection is reasonably, biblically, and historically confirmed then the Bible is true and there really is a Lake of Fire many call Hell.  There really is an eternal life to come.  There really is a divine judgment for all mankind to face.  There really is a choice that you must and are making concerning your eternal future.  Life really is about more than just your present existence and problems.  Death is not the end of your life or problems, you will and must stand before God when all is said and done on this earth.  What is your choice?]

C.     Collective Verification of the Physical Resurrection – [The Empirical Historical Data.  Someone might argue, “Well, preacher, you give some convincing arguments, but all your arguments come form the Bible alone.  You can’t just trust the Bible preacher, and there just is no evidence for Jesus and the resurrection apart form the Bible.”  My disillusioned friend, you are so wrong.  There are volumes of extra biblical evidences for the life and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.  There is:]

1.      Josephous a Jewish/Roman historian [records the resurrection turmoil more than once in his written works.]

2.      Tacitus A Roman Historian [ - In his book Annals makes a statement about one he calls Christus that was condemned by Pontius. A clear reference to Jesus.]

3.      Suetonius A Roman Historian [- In his work called The Life of Claudius writes about a disturbance at the instigation of Chrestus.  We are not sure what Suetonius is referring to because he wrote after the death and resurrection of Christ, however, some believe this is a clear reference to Christians and Christ.]

4.      Pliny c AD 111 A Roman Historian [- in his letter to emperor Trajan, Pliny refers to Christians as those who sing together to Christ as to a God.]

5.      The Jewish Rabbinical Evidence [- These contain a number of references to Jesus, however these were written a number of centuries after Jesus.  They denied the virgin birth and said Jesus was an illegitimate child.  They tell of his execution but claim that his trial was left open for forty days to give people a chance to present evidence to clear Jesus.  They identified him as Jesus of Nazareth.  They say Jesus practiced sorcery or witchcraft. They say he mocked the wise men of Jerusalem (Pharisees).  They say Jesus disciples healed the sick in his name.  They say he was a false prophet and that he had only five disciples.  They say that Jesus said that he came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it.  All written by those who vehemently hated Jesus, his followers, and anyone who would choose to follow Him.]

6.      The Church of Jesus Christ [- The physical resurrection is the cardinal pretense of the Body of Christ.  Take away the physical resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the Church and the church ceases to exist.  All the religious leaders would have had to have done to end Christianity in the first century, and all that the enemies of our Lord and His Church would have to do throughout this Church age would be lay out the body of the Lord Jesus Christ for all to see and Christianity would cease to exist.]

[But the religious leaders who crucified our Lord could not and they did not lay out the body of Jesus. Why? Because Jesus was not dead, He was alive, and physically alive at that.  Not only was He physically alive but He was physically glorified as well.]

[In February of 2007 there was a claim made, by film maker James Cameron, that the tomb of Jesus had been found.  What about this claim?  If this claim were proven true then is would have devastated Christianity.  It would have been unequivocal proof that Jesus did not rise from the dead.  However, once the tomb was investigated and studied by bible scholars, archaeologist, and authorities from around the world and from every walk of life and religious background it became irrefutably evident that the tomb had been misunderstood and misreported.  It was not the tomb of Jesus at all.]

[If anyone were ever able to provide irrefutable proof that Jesus died and did not resurrect then Christianity would cease to exist.  The resurrection is the foundation of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.  No one has yet provided such evidence and no one will in the future, because you can not produce the remains of a physically living body.  Jesus Physically rose from the grave and He is eternally physically alive. The Church is evidence of the resurrection of our Lord.]

D.    Convicting Validation of the Physical Resurrection (1 Jn 5.11-13) [- The litmus test of the new birth is the indwelling presence of God in the heart and life of the believer.  Nothing substantiates the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ more than His personal spiritual presence and illumination with His saint.  The Bible States it this way:]

[1 John 5:11-13 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. ]

1.      The Indwelling presence (Rev 3.20; Jn 1.12) – [When a sincere seeker hears the undeniable Word of God and responds with confession and conviction to the revelation of God, then the Bible clearly reveals that the Lord Jesus Christ will accept this confession and respond by moving into the inmost being of the newly born Christian.  Once the Lord Jesus Christ moves into this individuals life He makes Himself known by establishing an undeniable relationship with this new child of God.  The Bible states:]

[Revelation 3:20 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. ]

[This is the new spiritual birth realized in the heart and life of the new believer, and supernaturally established and support by the eternal authority of Almighty God.]

[John 1:12 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: ]
