Foundations For The Church

The Mission Of The Church

Acts 1.6-11

www.thischristianjourney.com

[The beginning of the book of Acts reveals some undeniable foundations for the Church and Christians.  These foundations include,]

  • [The Glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ]
  • [The Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ]
  • [The Mission of the Church]
  • [The indwelling Holy Spirit and His Power]
  • [The Anticipation of the Church]
  • [The continuing work of the Church.]

[We considered the foundations of the physical resurrection and ascension of our Lord last week.  Those two foundations assure us that our Lord Jesus Christ is not a figment of our imagination, nor is He some legend or fairytale, but He is the Lord of all glory and must be the Lord of our lives.  The fact and reality of the Lord Jesus Christ is the corner stone of our Christian faith and walk.  Fail to know with absolute assurance that Jesus is alive and reigning today and you will make ship wreck in your Christian life and walk. ]

[To allow the foundation of the physical life of our Lord to crumble beneath you is to fall into the misery of the prodigal life.   A prodigal walk for a child of God is described as a dead life and walk.  It results in depression, despondency, and desperation.  No one is as miserable as a born again Christian who is not willingly standing upon the sure foundation of the physical resurrection and ascension of our Lord.  If you are absolutely certain that Jesus is physically alive and at the right hand of God the Father Almighty then you will live a life wholly surrendered to Him and His Lordship everyday.]

[My Christian brother and sister, you must understand that every other foundation that is critical to your Christian life and success in Christ rests upon this first foundation of the physical resurrection and ascension of our Lord.]

[The Foundation of our Mission - The next critical foundation mentioned in the book of Acts is that of the mission of the Church.  The Bible states,]

[Proverbs 29:18 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.]

[To understand the mission of the Church and your placement in the Church of our Lord is to know what God wants you to do as one of His Children.  Praise God, your Heavenly Father has work for you to do, and its not hidden work, it is a plainly revealed work and you need to be about that work.]

Our Mission Is,

A.     To Proclaim The Word (vs 7-11) [- Two distinct types of people are seen here in this text.  There are,]

1.      The Spectators (vs 10-11; Psalm 100.2) [– And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. – I suggest to you today that the majority of those who call themselves Christian are mere spectators of our Lord in our world.  They are doing what these angles challenged the early Christians for doing.  They are gazing up toward heaven.]

[Gazing - ἐμβλέποντες (Gk) – emblépsō, from en (1722), in or on, and blépō (991), to look. To look in the face, fix the eyes upon, stare at. Followed by the dat. (Mark 10:21, 27; 14:67; Luke 20:17; 22:61; John 1:36, 42; Acts 1:10, 11 where it is atenízontes [816], gazing, followed by eis [1519], unto). In the sense of to look at or upon, meaning to contemplate, consider (Matt. 6:26; Sept.: Is. 51:1, 2, 6). By implication, to look at distinctly, see clearly, discern, used trans. (Mark 8:24, 25; Acts 22:11).[1] ]

[Literally this word means to look upon.  The problem is that according to,]

[Acts 1:9 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. ]

[The Lord Jesus was out of their sight.  But there they stood, gazing up into heaven.  They called themselves looking upon the Lord, but they could not see the Lord, because He was out of their sight.  I suggest to you that in much of our worship and what people call worship today we are gazing upon the Lord, but the Lord is not in our sight.  We are, as they were, mere spectators.  ]

[Our Lord does not call us to be mere spectators.  The Bible is clear we are to,]

[Psalm 100:2 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.]

[Why do we sign unto the Lord, because of the great service He has called us to do and, I believe, because of the manifested results of that service.  Yet we find the vast majority of self proclaiming Christians rendering a suspicious service that does not fulfill the mission given by our Lord.]

[Let us not be found to be mere spectators, gazing up toward heaven, claiming to be looking upon our Lord, while in reality we cannot see Him for He is, in reality, out of our sight.]

2.      The Proclaimers (vs 7-8; Matt 28.18-20; Rom 10.13-14,17; Mark 16.15) [And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  – Jesus told His people exactly what their mission was.  They were to be witnesses unto Him.]

[Witnesses μάρτυρες (Gk) - Peculiar to the NT is the designation as mártures (pl., witnesses) of those who announce the facts of the gospel and tell its tidings (Acts 2:32; 3:15; 10:39, 41; 13:31; Rev. 11:3). [2] ]

[Of similar direction we are reminded of the Great Commission,]

[Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. ]

[My friends we are called upon to carry the gospel of our Lord to a lost and dying world.  Hence, we must open our mouths and purposefully proclaim and deliver the message of our Lord and His saving grace.  There is no other way for the world to hear the life giving message of our Lord if we don’t tell them; hence a proclamation is absolutely necessary.]

[Life Style Evangelism - Now there are some who would say, well yes we must be witnesses, but we can be witnesses in life style evangelism, winning the lost without ever saying a word about our faith and beliefs.  I tell you that yes, we must live the Christian life before them, but if we never tell them why we live the way we do then we have not been a witness to them.  We must open our mouths and speak of our Lord to our lost world for,]

[Romans 10:13-14 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ]

[Romans 10:17 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. ]

[We are not fulfilling the Great Commission or the mission of Acts 1.7-8 if we are not being the witness we are asked to be.  We must open our mouths and proclaim the gospel to all the world.]

[Who are the People of our Mission?  Look again at,]

[Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ]

[Jerusalem = Their City]

[Judea = Their Nation]

[Samaria = Their Enemies Nation]

[Uttermost Part = Everyone Else]

[Our mission as the people of our Lord is to the proclaim the gospel to the whole world.  Mark wrote it this way,]

[Mark 16:15 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ]

[We ought be so given to the mission of proclaiming the gospel of our Lord that our animals know the gospel message.]

[A true witness for our Lord is no mere spectator he must be a proclaimer of the gospel message.]

B.      To Prepare The Workers (Matt 28.18-20; Eph 4.11-16) [– Now there is a simple fact that must be understood for our given mission.  If we are going to be the witnesses we ought to be then we must learn to be witnesses.  Witnessing does not come naturally it is a learned skill and behavior.  The great commission declares,]

[Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations [Salvation], baptizing them in the name of the Father [Assimilating], and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you [discipleship or training]: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. ]

[Paul gave us the essential steps needed to accomplish the mission of the Church when he wrote,]

[Ephesians 4:11-16 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. ]

[Notice verse twelve, it summarizes what is stated in this text.  If we will fulfill the essential mission of the Church then we must,]

1.      Prepare The Saints (Eph 4.12) [–  For the perfecting of the saints, . . . – What is the primary purpose of the Church.  The Church is meant to perfect you.  This word perfect means to mature you or to prepare you to a specific end.  That end being to do the work of the ministry.  However, the Church cannot equip or train you if you will not be trained.]

[Most people come to Church to worship and by worship they mean to gaze upon Jesus as a spectator.  They feel like they have worshipped if they walk away from the services with a cozy feeling.   Perhaps, if they got goose bumps while they were singing or something like that.  I have nothing against a cozy feeling but there is much more that a Church is supposed to be doing in your life. ]

[The truth is that this Church and its services are supposed to be a spiritual boat camp in your life.  It is supposed to challenge you to fulfill your mission in Christ, which is to be a witness and train you to be a witness.  However, for most people when a Church begins to do what it is really supposed to do then they just get up and leave the Church altogether or they stop coming to the services.  I tell you your Church and your pastor cannot do what they are supposed to do if you are not there and you are not ready to be trained.]

[Most Christian in our day are not ready to be trained because they misunderstand what their mission in Christ is and what their Church and pastor are supposed to do in preparing them to fulfill their God given mission.]

2.      Purpose To Do The Work (Eph 4.12) [- . . . for the work of the ministry, . . . – The second thing a Church must do is send you to be a witness.  Each and every member of the Church MUST do the work of the ministry.  The problem here is that many people think that many of the things they do within a Church are fulfilling the mission of Christ gave them.  Most Christians are satisfied working for the saints in the Church.  My friends preaching to the Choir, ministering to the members of the Church, is not fulfilling the mission your Lord gave you.  Your mission is to reach a lost world with the gospel message.]

[Its not my spiritual gift – There are many who would say, “Well now, that’s just not my spiritual gift.”  You are absolutely right.  It is your mission.  The reason the Church is commanded to teach and equip you to do this work is because it does not just come naturally for anyone.  However, your mission in Christ is to be a witness to the uttermost part of the earth.]

3.      Provoke The Church (Eph 4.12; Heb 10.24) [- . . . for the edifying of the body of Christ: - The Bible says,]

[Hebrews 10:24 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: ]

[My friends we are going to have to encourage each other to stay on the task that is before us.  We must continuously remind ourselves about what our mission is and urge each other to continuously be at work in our mission.]

C.     To Purpose To Work (Matt 24.44-51) [– We have clear mission and it is foundational to our lives and our Church.  We must consciously and continuously remind ourselves of what our Mission and Ministry is and we must purposefully work in them.  Our Lord said,]

[Matthew 24:44-51 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. 45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; 49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; 50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, 51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ]

[Let our heart and minds desire to be recognized as a faithful and wise steward when our Lord returns.  The last thing our Lord said to His people before He was taken out of their sight was that they were to be witnesses for Him to all the world.  We will be faithful to our Lord when we are faithful to the mission he has left us.  Are we being faithful stewards?  Are we being witnesses to the uttermost part of the earth?]
