A.    The Promise of The Holy Spirit [– So what should our human response be to all that God has revealed about the Holy Spirit through His written Word?  There are two responses that apply to every human being.]  There is:

1.      The Sending of the Holy Spirit (John 16.7-8; 15.26) [– Without any doubt, what Christians experience today with the Holy Spirit is absolutely unique to our dispensation of Grace.  It began after the ascension of our Lord and will end with the rapture of the Church.  The Holy Spirit was present in the world prior to the ascension of our Lord, but only rarely, very rarely was anyone said to be filled by the Holy Spirit.  Access to the presence of God or any sense of the presence of God prior to the sending of the Holy Spirit was difficult, as revealed through the sacrifices and ceremonial rituals of the Old Testament.]

[But the sending of the Holy Spirit to indwell and potentially fill every born again believer changed everything.  Now, each and every believer has direct access to God, has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, and can be filled with Holy Spirit on a daily basis.  Concerning the sending of the Holy Spirit Jesus said,]

[John 16:7-8 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come . . .  ]

[John 15:26 26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: ]

[The sending of the Holy Spirit to indwell born again believers is a unique gift given to all who will receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior by calling out to Him for their personal salvation.]

2.      The Sealing of the Holy Spirit (Eph 1.13-14; John 14.16-17; Rom 8.14-15) [– Also referred to as the Indwelling or Baptizing of the Holy Spirit. ]

[The Bible states:]

[Ephesians 1:13-14 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.]

[The sealing of the Holy Spirit means that when you ask the Lord Jesus Christ to come into your life and be your personal Lord and Savior, He sends the Holy Spirit into you, who then becomes the presence of God within you.  John records it this way:]

[John 14:16-17 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. ]

[The Holy Spirit within the born again Christian becomes a reality that extends beyond every mortal barrier.  No philosophy can adequately explain it, no oratory can adequately describe it, and no lecture or sermon can adequately expound it.  It is the union of the supernatural with the natural.  It is the supernatural birth certificate that assures the new born child of God that they are eternally God’s child.  The Bible states,]

[Romans 8:14-15 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. ]

[Many have heard messages like this one and try to claim, in an intellectual sense, that the have the Holy Spirit of God; as if good moral works were the ultimate indication of the Holy Spirit’s presence.  But the born again Christian does not fain to know or explain the Holy Spirit’s presence.  The Holy Spirit is real in them, a vital, vibrant, quickening, and undeniable presence.  Yes, His presence will stir the child of God up to good works and godly living, but His presence is real and tangible within the child of God.]

[The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is the absolute assurance of a Child of God’s redemption.  Praise God for the sealing of the Holy Spirit of God through His indwelling presence.]

3.      The Filling Of The Holy Spirit (Eph 5.18; Acts 2.4;4.8,31; 7.55; 13.9,52; Luke 11.13; Acts 1.8) [- Once a person is born into the family of God they without any doubt receive the indwelling presence of God.  This is God’s undeniable gift to them.  Now, they are commanded to seek to be filled fully with the Holy Spirit. The Bible states:]

[Ephesians 5:18 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; ]

[The filling of the Holy Spirit is something more, much more, than the mere indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  The text we just read commands the Children of God to be filled, as if this filling is something dependent upon them.  The sealing or indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the divine act of God completed at the moments of ones salvation.  The filling of the Holy Spirit is a subsequent, recurring event dependent on the individual.  The sealing is the equivalent of our sanctification, the filling is the equivalent of our consecration.]

[We find examples of the recurring filling of our Lord’s people throughout the book of acts.  We see people filled with the Holy Spirit,]

         [At Pentecost]

[Acts 2:4 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.]

         [At the High Counsel]

[Acts 4:8 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, ]

         [Following the High Counsel]

[Acts 4:31 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.]

         [At Stephens Stoning]

[Acts 7:55 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, ]

[Paul was subsequently Filled with the Holy Spirit]

[Acts 13:9 9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, ]

[The Disciples were subsequently Filled with the Holy Spirit]

[Acts 13:52 52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.]

[This reveals that while every Christian has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit not every Christian is always fully influenced by the Holy Spirit.  Through the filling of the Holy Spirit an individual Christian becomes empowered to do whatever God may desire to do through them.  In order for the Holy Spirit to fill a child of God the individual Christian must seek and submit to the Holy Spirit and His influence in their life and life’s work.  The Bible reveals:]

[Luke 11:13 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?]

[There are many things that the Holy Spirit might use a submissive Christian to do.  The Bible reveals God doing supernatural miracles through submissive Holy Spirit filled men and women of God.  The most obvious thing that scripture reveals that the Holy Spirit will empower Christians to do is found in:]

[Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ]

[The point is simple.  It is not enough that you as a child of God will be indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God; you must be filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit as well.  When the children of God are empowered by the presence of God, then they will turn the world upside down.  They will turn the world away from evil, selfishness, and sinfulness and toward good, selflessness, and righteousness in the sight of God.]

[Are you indwelled by the Holy Spirit of God?  If not, then you need to accept the Lord Jesus Christ!]

[Are you filled with the Holy Spirit of God?  If not, then you need to seek and submit to the filling of the Holy Spirit of God in your life.]

B.     The Power Of The Holy Spirit (vs 7-8) [– The Holy Spirit is presently at work around us.  Consider what our Lord said in our text, we read:]

[Acts 1:7-8 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ]

[The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is intended to give us supernatural power.  This supernatural power is intended to equip and enable us as our Lord’s children and ambassadors in this lost and corrupt world.  Notice carefully what our text states about this Holy Spirit power.]

[There are many in our day, who mistakenly believe, that the Holy Spirit empowers people to do mystic and incredible things.  They might think that the Holy Spirit grants the power to speak in tongues, heal people, or give prophetic utterances.  But our Lord in our text is very clear about they power the Holy Spirit will grant.]

[Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ]

[Our text declares that the primary power granted by the Holy Spirit is the power to be a witness for our Lord.  There are a couple of other things the Bible states that the Holy Spirit will do.]

1.      He Convicts the Rebellious (Joihn 16.8-12; Acts 9.3-5) [- Our Text Reads:]

[John 16:8-12 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. ]

[What is it in the hearts of lost and rebellious men, women, and children that warns them of their impending danger?  What is it in the hearts and minds of lost people that brings the darkness of an eternal terror to their consciousness?  What  brings this sense of horror, that rests merely an immortal step away, into the awareness of condemned humanity?  How do the lost and sinful people know that there is this horrible condemnation on their horizon?  How do they know!? Through the conviction of the Holy Spirit of God!]

[The New Testament reveals how a man named Saul was kicking against the pricks.  The text reads:]

[Acts 9:3-5 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.]

[It is not the hatred of God that causes the Holy Spirit to prick your lost heart and warn you in undeniable and intimately personal ways of your lostness and impending condemnation.  No, instead it is the love of God reaching out toward you, warning you, yearning that you might repent and accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.  Almighty God loves you and so He continuously reaches out toward you, lovingly longing that you might repent and be saved.]

[But the more you resist the pricks of the Holy Spirit the more callused you become, and the more insensitive you become to the move of God toward you.  Be careful my scornful lost friend your eternal soul lies in the balance.  Hear the heart of God through the Holy Spirit of God and respond today. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.]

[Christians, understand that it is not you who brings conviction into the hearts of the lost.  It is the powerful work of the Holy Spirit working upon them.  This combined with our witness and testimony has the power to win the lost.]

2.      He Comforts the Redeemed (vs 13; John 14.16-17, 26-27; Rom 8.14-16) [– For the born again Christian the Holy Spirit has an equally intimate and present work.  The Bible reveals:]

[John 14:26-27 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. ]

[For the born again Christian the Holy Spirit becomes their comforter, teacher, reminder, and assurer.  He will teach them the deep things of God through a depth of instruction that only a supernatural presence can provide.  The Holy Spirit and His instruction and presence will bring a peace, tranquility, and satisfaction into the life of a Christian that will confound all rational explanation.]

[The presence of the Holy Spirit within a Christian will assure them of their salvation and its resulting new relationship with their Heavenly Father.  They will know that they know that they know that they are saved and secure in their Lord Jesus Christ.  How?  Because:

[Romans 8:14-16 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:]

C.    The Purpose Of The Holy Spirit (vs 8) [– Without any doubt God has a plan for His children and His Church.  That purpose is revealed and empowered by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit within the people of God.  This purpose has already been briefly discussed, but now we must return to it.  Our text reads,]

[Acts 1:8 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. ]

[The Holy Spirit empowers the people of God to be witnesses for our Lord.  In equipping the people of God to be witnesses for God the Holy Spirit will,]

1.      Teach The Saints (John 16.13; 1 Cor 2.9-16) ]– This is the revelation of God within us, or the confirmation of the Word within us; I often refer to this as spiritual illumination.  The Word of God is our written revelation, immutable (never changing), trustworthy, and reliable.  The Holy Spirit is the illuminating or invigorating of our Lord’s written Word.]

[John 16:13 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. ]

[1 Corinthians 2:9-16 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. ]

[There are many things about our Heavenly Father that we just cannot understand or accept apart from the Holy Spirit of God.  But the Holy Spirit teaches us, or illuminates us in these matters.  Praise God the Holy Spirit teaches us the deep things of God.  Not everything about God, but many deep spiritual truths.]

[Why does the Holy Spirit teach us these things?  So we can be a testimony, or witness, for our Lord Jesus Christ.  God does not teach us so we can be wiser than our lost counterparts in our world.  He teaches us to empower us to reach a lost world.]

2.      Transform the World (Acts 2.3-4,41; 4.31) [- Our Heavenly Father desire that all men, women and children should be saved.  God does not want to see anyone go to hell.  So he teaches you and I, His children, ambassadors to a lost and dying world to carry the gospel of hope to the hopeless.]

[Notice that at Pentecost the Church was first filled with the Holy Spirit and then reach a multitude.]

[Acts 2:3-4 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ]

[Acts 2:41 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. ]

[Notice in Acts chapter four the Church was first filled and then spake with boldness.]

[Acts 4:31 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.]

[God has given the foundation of the Holy Spirit to His Church and people so that they might be witnesses for our Lord Jesus Christ and might reach a lost and dying world.]

[God has given the Church the foundations of,]

[The Physical Resurrection of our Lord]

[The Physical Ascension of our Lord]

[The Mission of the Church  - Evangelism]

[The Anticipation of the Church  - Rapture]

[The Indwelling Holy Spirit and His Power]

[The foundations are the catalyst that will prepare us and propel us to be at work in our Lord’s kingdom.]
