I Am He
John 18:4-6
4
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went
forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5
They answered him, Jesus of
Jesus was in the garden praying when Judas led that hateful
hoard to Him and then betrayed our Lord with a kiss.
They came with the darkness of death upon their minds.
They would take this insurrectionist to the high priest who would
sentence Him to death. The tenor of
their intensions and the terror that awaited Jesus was fully known to our Lord
as the passage reveals that He knew all things that should come upon Him, yet He
willingly went to suffer for our sins.
As this brood of discontent approached our Lord, Jesus reveals
His ability and His Humility. Jesus
was still Almighty God. His power was
fully intact, as revealed when He answered “I am He” and all his detractors were
thrown backward onto the ground.
His authority was still in place, as Jesus could have command twelve legions of
angels to deliver Him (Matt 26.53-54).
In His humility our Lord willingly laid down His life for us, that we
might find life through Him (John 10.17-18).
But notice the hardness of this discontented crowd.
Even after they pick themselves up off the ground and after our Lord
heals Malchus’ ear (Luke 22.51-52); both of which are supernatural acts of God.
They still arrested our Lord and took Him to the high priest for wrongful
accusation and judgment. People
often fail to see the work and hand of God even when He is working right before
their eyes. It wasn’t that evil had
prevailed that Jesus was judged and died a cruel death.
It was the need that evil had brought upon mankind and God’s great love
for sinful people that caused our Lord to lay down His life for us.
Hence our Lord said in the garden that day “I am He.”
